I’m definitely no expert in website promotion, I’m in the early stages of trying to gain traffic for my new site www.myfriendsuggests.com, a web 2.0 social networking site that uses friend networks to help generate personalized suggestions for everything from places to eat, drink, party to contractors, electricians and a good local barbershop.  As more of a programmer, the marketing aspect of setting up this site has been a big challenge for me.  Just recently I came across the Authority Black Book, this PDF file was an amazing resource that provided me a concise set of links and tactics to help grow my site’s traffic.  I just found the document and am now putting together a strategy for marketing my website and I’ve already begun putting some of the practices in to effect for my blog and have seen some immediate results.  I found this to be a great resource for someone new to the social marketing arena.  I’m hoping to find more resources like it, specifically for sites that are NOT blogs.  There seems to a lot of focus on marketing blogs but not much on how to market sites that require users for the site to be valuable to other users (e.g. my website, or something like eBay, mySpace, Digg, etc…).  These sites are very difficult to get started as they are pretty much useless until enough users get on the site.  I’m still looking for more creative ways to get more users registered on my site, but for now the techniques from the Authority Black Bookhave the best tips I’ve found.
