Testing Twitters Location API

While Twitter has released it’s location API it has not fully integrated it into it’s site just yet.  So as a developer if you are annotating tweets from your app with locations it may not be easy to tell if its working.  The simple solution is to look at the RSS feed, for example:  http://twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/thesuggestr_bot.rss

In the resulting XML if you see (with different values of course) <georss:point>32.898393216 -97.044557447</georss:point> – then you have successfully posted a location.

Remember that the user must opt-in to having the location of his/her tweets shared.

Blackberry Networking Helper Class

I came across this “life-saver” helper class, it helps auto detect the appropriate connection type to use when making connections using the blackberry networking classes. I’ve spent a ton of time debugging issues in applications and this class really has helped. I didn’t write it, but I want to point other BB developers towards it.

ETF Data Update

Sorry, we hadn’t updated the ETF data for ETF Finder tool in a while.  We just updated it today and now have it set to update on a recurring basis.

For those who haven’t tried it this simple tool allows you to find ETF based on a stock symbol.  This allows you to find ETFs with major holdings in a given stock.

Give it a shot.

Web 3.0 and the Semantic Web

I’m in the process of doing a lot of research on Web 3.0 and at the same time doing some research on different marketing tools and techniques.  With both in mind I created a Ning site on the topic of web3.0.  I’ll be working on it sporadically and using it to document what I learn and experiment with as I dive into the Semantic Web.  If you happen to arrived here and are interested in the Semantic Web – please join me.

If I create any useful tools or code I’ll be sure to post it here.

Screencast.com vs. YouTube

After the past few days putting together our first screencast for theSUGGESTR.com (you can find it here).  I was really disappointed when I uploaded it to YouTube and found my video was quite blurry.  After doing some research and re-rendering the video with a ton of different settings I gave in a tried a different hosting service, Screencast.com.  Without any extra work my video showed up in perfect clarity.

For a screencast clarity and crispness is extremely important and Screencast.com made that obtainable with a lot less fuss than YouTube.

BBTrackr Help with “Tunnel Failed” error

I’ve worked with a few user’s of BBTrackr to fix the Tunnel Failed error.  If your on BIS you need to set your APN settings.

The  value for your network can be found here:
http://blackberryforums.pinstack.com/360-tcp_apn_wap_gateway_port_carrier.html

To configured the TCP settings in BlackBerry as follows:

menu => Options – Advanced Options - TCP and enter APN information per the link above.

I hope this helps!
