BBTrackr Update

November 25, 2008 | In: Blackberry, GPS

After releasing BBTrackr yesterday it became apparent that it didn’t work on all phones.  Basically the issue was that it did not work on CDMA phones (Verizon and Sprint in the US).  A new version has been releases that does ‘work’ on CDMA phones.  However the ability to update the OpenCellID database is not functional as that database only works on GSM/GPRS phones (still verifying that).  You should be able to use the feature to update your FireEagle account just fine.

Since I don’t have a CDMA phone I could only test with a simulator so I’d appreciate it if someone with a CDMA phone could let me know how things go.

The new version can be downloaded here.

I just went outside with my Alltel 8830 Curve, and the GPS part appears to work, as it gave me coordinates I know to be good at my home location.

Silly question time now – how do I get this information to feed into Fireeagle?

Do you have a fireeagle account already? From the BBTrackr menu, there is a “Setup FireEagle” option, this takes you through the steps to link the program to your FE account. Once linked a new options will appear on the menu “Update FireEagle”, when clicked the update is sent to FireEagle.

Currently the FE updates only occur when you click the menu item, if you (or anyone else) would like it to update every x minutes I can build that into a new version.

I think we at Fire Eagle think that the option to turn on automatic updates is really really useful and if you’re thinking about it already, we’d totally love you to do it!

Uwe,

Can you connect to that URL via the browser? I can’t reproduce that issue on my simulator or phone.

Hi,

Is there any update on the FireEagle authorization issue? I am able to get GPS location but unable to setup Fireeagle. Got the error below on my Blackberry curve 8900 running on OS 4.6:

OAuth Authorization for FireEagle.

An error occured:https://fireeagle.yahooapis.com/oauth/request_token — Tunnel failed — java.io.IOException: Tunnel failed

Downloaded the update for my Verizon 8330, and it doesn’t seem to work in any mode. Doesn’t update FireEagle, and CellInfo: Network Type Not Supported for OpenCellID 4

It seems like there are issues with this on the Verizon phone.

The OpenCellID feature doesn’t work on CDMA phones, but the GPS / FireEagle should work so I will look into that.

Verizon locks out the GPS from any apps except their own. Google Maps works, but only via triangulation of cell towers.
