Introducing BBTrackr for the Blackberry
November 24, 2008 | In: Blackberry, GPS
I’ve made a simple application call BBTrackr. It is currently in beta.
The application has two main features:
1) It uses both your phones GPS (or GPS Puck) as well as cell phone data to contribute to OpenCellID.org. The OpenCellID project collects cell/location information sot htat location aware applications can be built for cell phones that do NOT have a GPS device.
2) The location information received from either the GPS or OpenCellID can be used to update FireEagle. FireEagle is a location based service that allows numerous web application to know your current location so that they can provide you accurate and useful information.
Both of these features are just a tease for some of the features we are planning for the upcoming BlackBerry Application for our site, theSUGGESTR.com. In the meantime support the OpenCellID project by downloading and running BBTrackr today.

By the way, this has only been tested on a 8320 Curve. If you download it please let me know what phone it worked / did not work on.
Thanks.

Hey there, some people on Twitter have been trying the app and coming up with some problems. Here’s a link to one of them: http://twitter.com/bellanyc1/status/1022124825

Sorry for the headaches.
Can you post some information, the exact device version, OS version, and if you have the GPS on or off. Also does the error occur as soon as you start the program or once you do something in it?
Last but not least, could you try disabling your GPS and see if the result is different.
Thanks.

Found the problem – the code only works on GSM/GPRS phones, not CDMA phones (which Sprint and Verizon are).
I’ll work on a patch today.

I’ve got it working on the Bold. Seems to be one problem though. It doesnt seem to be able to access the gps data on its own. I need to have google maps running in the background for bbtrackr to get gps data. Haven’t tested yet how it does on updating while I’n moving.

Does the tracker update fireeagle on its own periodically or is manually choosing updat from the menu the only way to do it? Would be great if it updated automatically and if the user could set the update interval.

Are you still having the issue with the GPS? I’d like to figure out what’s wrong.
The current version requires manual updates of FireEagle (via the menu option). I’m working on a new version that has some more flexibility. Check back in the next few days.
Thanks!
